Where you stay can completely change the pace of a Da Nang trip. The three most useful bases—Da Nang’s southern resort strip, the My Khe/city area, and Hoi An—are close enough to combine, but they suit very different travelers.

1. Beach resort strip: best for a relaxing resort-first trip
The resort corridor south of central Da Nang works best when the property itself is part of the destination. Large pools, direct beach access, breakfast, kids’ facilities and on-site restaurants make it easy to enjoy a full day without constantly arranging transportation.
This area is especially practical for families, couples who want downtime, and travelers ending a busy Vietnam itinerary. It can also be a smart middle ground if you want to visit both Da Nang and Hoi An without changing hotels.
What I liked about using a resort as a base
- The beach and pool were available without planning a separate outing.
- The quieter setting made the trip feel restful even with sightseeing days.
- Hoi An was still realistic as a half-day or evening trip.
- A larger property gave us useful rainy-day options.
The trade-off is spontaneity outside the hotel. You will usually rely more on taxis or ride-hailing for local restaurants, cafés and city attractions. Resort dining can also cost more than eating in town.

2. My Khe and central Da Nang: best all-around base
For most first-time visitors, the My Khe side of the city offers the easiest balance. You can start the day at the beach, reach cafés and restaurants on foot or with a short ride, and still explore the Han River, Dragon Bridge, markets and city neighborhoods without turning every outing into a long transfer.
Da Nang’s official tourism portal describes My Khe as roughly 3–5 km from the city center and connected by the Võ Nguyên Giáp–Trường Sa coastal roads. Which side of central Da Nang?
- My Khe / An Thuong: better if you want beach walks, cafés, casual restaurants and a visitor-friendly neighborhood.
- Han River / Hai Chau: better if city food, markets and bridges matter more than having the beach outside your hotel.
The downside is that urban beach hotels rarely feel as private as large resorts. Traffic and construction can vary block by block, so check the hotel’s exact map location and recent guest reviews rather than booking based on the district name alone.
Choose this area if: this is your first visit, you have only two or three nights, you plan to eat out often, or different people in your group want different activities.
3. Hoi An: best for atmosphere and slow evenings
Stay in Hoi An when the Ancient Town is not just a side trip but the emotional center of your itinerary. Being nearby lets you explore early in the morning and linger after many day visitors leave. That makes a real difference if riverside walks, historic streets, cafés, tailoring or relaxed evenings are high on your list.
The official Hoi An heritage site places the Old Town about 30 km south of Da Nang. In practice, this means you should allow extra time for airport transfers and for any day focused on Da Nang’s city sights. Traffic and weather can change journey times, so check a live map on the day rather than planning around one fixed number.
Old Town or beach side?
- Near the Ancient Town: best for walking, dining and evening atmosphere.
- An Bang or Cua Dai area: best if you want a quieter beach stay with Hoi An accessible by a short local ride.
The main trade-off is convenience for Da Nang. If your list includes several Da Nang restaurants, Son Tra Peninsula, the Han River and an early flight, commuting from Hoi An may become tiring.
Choose Hoi An if: you want more than one evening in the Ancient Town, prefer a slower cultural stay, or have already visited Da Nang before.
The best choice by trip length
Two nights
Choose one base. My Khe or central Da Nang is the most flexible for a first trip. Pick Hoi An instead only if the Ancient Town is your clear priority.
Three to four nights
A single base still works well. Choose a beach resort for a slower holiday, My Khe for variety, or Hoi An for atmosphere. From a Da Nang base, make one focused Hoi An outing rather than commuting back and forth every day.
Five nights or more
Consider splitting the stay: two or three nights in Da Nang and two nights in Hoi An. This is my preferred planning option when both destinations matter equally because it reduces repeated transfers and gives each place a different rhythm.
